These
are the ancestors
the ghosts
What spirit
remains
witnessed
centuries
of the cycle
of shoot
flower
seed
and snow
before
we came
with our vision
and our machines
and our noise
What humans
name restored
nature
has reclaimed
reasserting
in our
retreat
reaffirming
how fleeting
our influence
and how
unpredictable
nature's
return
What's left
is a spare beauty
the bones
and silhouettes
of flowers
framed by
grasses that
hold
the ghostly weight
of February snows
The birds
are busy
but green
still sleeps
under a matted quilt
of winter's refugees
