Momentary Illumination

For a moment
I felt you at my shoulder
Lady Sun
The world brightened
and a hint of blue
almost broke through
I turned to greet you
and you
slipped away

Winter's Sea

With eyes shut
winter's wind
becomes
winter's ocean
storm-driven
rolling
roaring
scuplting
snow dunes
into frozen
waves

January Garden

Hoarding green
nurturing it
pruning
carefully turning
fretting lest
a single leaf
fade
fall
inevitably
a few
yellow
soft as tissue
in
winter-roughed
fingers

Needful

As afternoon's
clouds
muffle
the blue
and earth rolls
toward
January's
too-early twilight
I recall
with joy
our playful
morning
meeting,
Lady Sun.
The river
exhaled
yesterday's warmth
and your sparkle
refracted
from every
flake
and ice floe.
I lifted my face
and inhaled cold
and your gold
rays
and felt
something
I didn't realize
was missing
return.
